《홍천횡단: 생동의 축지법 Hongcheon Crossing: Long Distance Short Cuts of Life》

“‘홍천횡단’은 동서로 긴 홍천 지역을 지시한다. 양 끝의 두 지점이 물리적 거리의 한계와 그것을 잇는 연결 가능성을 동시에 보여준다면, ‘생동의 축지법’은 그 연결에 부스터를 단 격이다*. ‘축지법’은 힘(=속도)과 힘의 감축을 동시에 구성한다. 힘을 빼고서 힘을 생성한다. 초월적 힘은 하나의 개체들로, 고대의 시간으로, 비합리적 언어 체계로 향한다. 곧 축지법은 각각 하나의 몸을 가정하며, 근대의 기계 문명과 다른 셈법을 요청하며, 가시적인 현실 질서를 흐릿하게 보존한다.**”

“횡단은 ‘지역’에 관한 안팎의 오역을 바로잡으려는 시도이기도 하다. 지역과 바깥의 위상차가 아니라, 지역 자체의 요철을 감각하는 것, 스스로의 변증법적 고양을 통해 자신을 정립하는 것. 안의 입구를 조망하며 바깥의 출구를 정향하는 것. 어느 날 낯선 지역에 던져진 예술가들은 무언가를 붙잡아야 한다. 불안정한 환경으로부터 스스로를 안정화하거나 예술의 새로운 형식을 창조하기 위해서라기보다 초과된 지역의 이미지를 투과하는 자신의 연약한 신체를 조정하기 위해. 곧 우묵한 안과 튀어나온 바깥을 조율하는 신체 내 축지법을 가동시키기 위해.”

* 오스트리아, 독일, 한국의 12명의 작가는 두 팀으로 나눠 팔봉산과 오대산을 답사하며 ‘홍천횡단’ 프로젝트의 본격적인 시작을 열었다. 홍천 동쪽과 서쪽에 자리한 팔봉산과 오대산이 각 지역의 상징적 거점이라면, 두 팀은 각자의 지역에 머물렀고, 따라서 횡단은 두 장소를 잇기보다 가지 않은 나머지 장소를 각각의 주체가 상상하는 방식에 가깝다.

** 팔봉산과 오대산 답사 이후, 두 팀은 마지막으로 동학혁명군 전적지에서 합류하며 물리적인 홍천 이동의 일정을 마쳤다. 곧 새로운 시대에 대한 열망으로 혁명을 꿈꾸던 이들을 ‘함께’ 기억하며, 현재를 되비쳐 보고자 했다. 

““Hongcheon Crossing” first testifies to the longitudinal expansion of Hongcheon County from east to west. The time it takes to move between the two ends of the region – the largest one in South Korea – simultaneously shows the limits imposed by physical distance and the possibilities of connections between them*. The “long distance short cuts” referred to in the title, then, can be understood as boosters for those connections. They imply both force (i.e. speed) and the saving of force. Reduction turns into production. The transcendent force, as a singular entity, is directed to ancient times, demanding irrational linguistic and mathematical systems that differ from those of modern civilization and preserving a blurred order of visible reality.**”

”the act of “crossing” is an attempt to correct a topological misinterpretation of the “local”. It is not about the phase difference between inside and outside, but about sensing the unevenness of the local itself, about establishing itself through its own dialectical elevation. The artists, all of a sudden thrown into unfamiliar territory, need to hold on to something. Not to protect themselves from an unfamiliar environment or to create new forms of art, but to adjust their fragile bodies to the excessive imagery of a particular place. They are, so to speak, in search of “short cuts” within their body that can reconcile the “long distance” between silent inside and an outside that extends beyond the region.”

* Twelve artists from Austria, Germany, and South Korea, participated in Pink Factory’s 2023 project “Hongcheon Crossing”. Their month-long residency in Hongcheon Town began in early September with a field trip. Divided into two teams, the artists explored Palbongsan and Odaesan, two mountains located in the east and west of Hongcheon County, respectively, visiting the of their respective “side” of Hongcheon. Rather than connecting these opposite symbolic strongholds of Hongcheon, these “crossings” are more about how each artist imagines the remaining places they did not visit. 

** After their separate mountain trips, all artists met at the Donghak Memorial in the centre of the county, to remember the revolutionaries who dreamed of a new era and reflect on the present together, thus completing their own physical journey to Hongcheon. Following these excursions and several introductory workshops, the artists completed their work in Hongcheon Town, at temporary studios in the former Jungang Inn and at Pink Plant, an art space on the roof of Central Market. The exhibition “Crossing Hongcheon” presents the results of their artistic explorations and collaborations.
